Every week I bring you the latest SEO News. This week’s stories are about the Hawk algorithm update, ranking signals, 3 easy link building tactics & Medium vs a blog.
SEO Basics What are ranking signals?
Ranking signals or ranking factors are characteristics of a website that determine the position in the search engines. All ranking signals combined form the algorithm of a search engine. How this algorithm works is a secret. Nobody knows exactly which factors decide the order of the search results.
This article caught my eye on the Yoast blog. SEO’s take for granted ranking signals but what if search engine optimization (SEO for short) is completely new to you. How does Google pick which site to show? This article answers that question for you. If you’re an SEO and you’re reading this then let me know what you think is the strongest ranking factor today?1
The 3 Easiest Link Building Tactics Any Website Can Use to Acquire Their First 50 Links – Whiteboard Friday – Moz
Without a solid base of links, your site won’t be competitive in the SERPs — even if you do everything else right. But building your first few links can be difficult and discouraging, especially for new websites. Never fear — Rand is here to share three relatively quick, easy, and tool-free (read: actually free) methods to build that solid base and earn yourself links.
This is an interesting white board Friday by Rand Fishkin over at the Moz blog. This title makes a very bold promise – easy linking building tactics for your first 50 links. Check it out and let me know if this article lives up to it’s promise.2
Should You Publish Content on a Company Blog or Medium?
With consumer attention spans dwindling and so much competition, just how can you cut through and get people to view your content regularly? How do you become a destination site for content consumption if your company is known primarily for unrelated products and services?
This is an interesting question posed by Clark Boyd on Search Engine Journal. My immediate gut reaction to this article is that you should have your own blog. You control your blog and medium could come and go at any time. But Clark points out some pretty compelling reasons to use Medium. What are your thoughts – blog or medium?3
August 22, 2017: The day the ‘Hawk’ Google local algorithm update swooped in
I recently reported on an algorithm update impacting the local results that happened on August 22, 2017. This was a strictly-local update, from what I can tell so far, which means that it had no impact on the non-local organic results.
The last major Local update was the Possum update in September 2016! In this news story on the search engine land blog, Joy Hawkins discusses a change to the local algorithm that has been dubbed the “hawk” update. I offer a local SEO service so this story is of particular interest. In my opinion the Possum update was kinda broken because it filtered out businesses that were close to each other. The Hawk update seems to have fixed this issue. Good news for local businesses that were unfairly filtered through the Possum update. Have you seen changes to your local rankings?4
