Every week I bring you the latest Web Design News. This week’s stories are about a vulnerability in WordPress, 22 Themes for Universities, The Best Video Background plugins and Automating Updating your WordPress themes & plugins.
Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability in WordPress 4.8.1
The vulnerability requires an account on the victim’s site with the Contributor role – or any account in a WordPress installation with bbPress plugin, as long as it has posting capabilities (if anonymous posting is allowed then no account is needed). All WordPress installations are at risk when these conditions are met.
Earlier this week the good folks on the Securi blog shared a vulnerability in WordPress 4.8.1. Since the latest version of WordPress is 4.8.2 it would be best to upgrade to the latest version as soon as you can. It’s best practice to login to WordPress at least weekly and update all plugins, themes and most importantly WordPress core. Just remember to back up your site first!1
22 Best WordPress Themes for Universities
Are you looking for the best WordPress theme for universities and colleges? There are plenty of WordPress themes designed for corporate and small businesses, but they are not suitable for an educational organization.
I certainly don’t have any Universities as clients but this post from wpbeginner has done all the hard work in finding the very best themes for universities. If you’re doing the web design for a university, college or school then this post will be a handy reference. Check it out and let me know what you think.2
Best Video Background Plugins for WordPress
Video backgrounds are a hugely popular website design trend that undoubtedly adds a touch of cool to any site. More importantly, though, using a video background is a powerful way to amplify your site’s message and engage visitors.
The stats for video is insane, with YouTube being the second most used search engine and Facebook heavily favoring video on their platform. The reason is that video is much more engaging than text. This article by Nona Blackman on the tutsplus blog is a handy reference for anyone looking to add a video back ground to their WordPress site.3
Say G’day to Automate! Never Manually Update WordPress Plugins or Themes Ever Again
When was the last time you logged into WordPress and didn’t have to update your plugins, themes or WordPress itself? I’m gonna to bet your answer is “never”.
This is a handy new WordPress plugin shared by James Farmer on the wpmudev blog. I’m afraid I’m guilty as charged as I have never logged into WordPress without someone plugin or theme needing to be updated. Since security threats are usually because of outdated plugins, themes and core this is a handy plugin.4
